Differences Between a Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree

When it comes to furthering your education, there are a lot of buzzwords that can be thrown around that can be difficult to wrap your head around. One of the most significant decisions you’ll make when it comes to further studies is choosing between the different types of degrees, diplomas or certificates. All kinds of educational credentials are very valuable in Australia, and having extra qualifications can help you secure the career you want but how do you decide which option is right for you?

These are the main differences between diplomas, bachelor’s degrees and certificates so that you can make an informed decision that works best for you and your career goals.

Diploma Vs. Bachelor’s Degree

These are the two most commonly compared options, and there are some significant differences in the two. Diplomas are usually a shorter, more focused course of study than a bachelor’s degree. A diploma typically takes one to two years to complete and most often gives you practical, hand-on experience and training in a specific field.

A bachelor’s degree on the other hand normally takes three to four years to finish and is typically more comprehensive that includes a broader range of coursework.

If you’re thinking about undertaking a diploma in a specific field related to alternative medicine, our diplomas at CCM provide you with practical understanding of the skills and knowledge you need to begin your career in the alternative medicine field.

Is a Diploma Better Than a Certificate?

Both diplomas and certificates are very valuable credentials that can lead to you having your dream career in a number of different industries and one is not necessarily better than the other. There are some main differences between the two though.

Certificates are normally shorter and more narrowly focused than a diploma, focusing mainly on a specific skill set or area so you may not have quite as broad of a range of skills if completing a certificate rather than undertaking a diploma. It really is what is best suited for you though and if you need further guidance, you could always seek the help of a guidance counsellor who specialises in education or career changes.

What About an Advanced Diploma?

An advanced diploma is a higher level of qualification than a standard diploma and is designed to give you a more thorough and in depth understanding of the skills and knowledge for your field. An advanced diploma is a great option if you’re looking for something more than a diploma, but you aren’t quite ready to take on a bachelor’s degree at university.

The Choice is Yours

When it really comes down to crunch time, the decision is entirely up to you and your individual goals and circumstances. Regardless of whether you choose to pursue a diploma, a bachelor’s degree or a certificate, obtaining any sort of recognised qualification can open a number of doors to career opportunities you can be excited about.

Take the time to really do your research and to weigh up your options and decide what’s best for you before committing to a pathway for further education. If you’re looking for further information about the differences between each of the certificates, seeking the help of a careers advisor may be the best way to decide which pathway will best align you with your future career goals and aspirations.
